Specialised Cargo

Project Cargo Handling in the UAE

Moving a 60-tonne transformer, a set of wind turbine blades or a complete production line is very different from shipping a container. Project cargo needs engineering, careful planning and a team that can coordinate ships, cranes, trailers, permits and site schedules as one operation.

Our project cargo service in the UAE supports EPC contractors, energy and utility companies, manufacturers and plant owners who need heavy lift and out-of-gauge equipment delivered safely, on budget and in step with the project timeline.

What's included in our project cargo service

  • Feasibility studies and route surveys that check bridges, power lines, road widths and turning circles before the cargo moves.
  • Transport engineering, including lifting plans, lashing calculations and the choice of trailers and cranes.
  • Ocean transport on breakbulk, heavy-lift and ro-ro vessels, or in flat rack and open top containers for smaller out-of-gauge pieces.
  • Charter solutions for full vessels or aircraft when schedules or sizes demand it, through our sea and air chartering service.
  • Road permits and escorts for oversized loads, coordinated with the relevant authorities.
  • Port handling: stevedoring, heavy-lift cranes and temporary laydown areas.
  • Customs clearance, including temporary import for equipment that will be re-exported after the project.
  • On-site delivery and positioning in coordination with your installation team.

How we manage a project shipment

  1. Kick-off and data gathering. We collect drawings, weights, centres of gravity and the project schedule, and agree contacts on all sides.
  2. Engineering and planning. Our team designs the transport solution, completes route surveys and prepares method statements and risk assessments.
  3. Quotation and approval. You receive a detailed proposal showing each leg, the equipment used and the timeline.
  4. Pre-shipment checks. We inspect packing, lifting points and documentation at the factory before collection.
  5. Execution. Cargo is lifted, transported and shipped under supervision, with progress reports at every milestone.
  6. Delivery and close-out. The cargo is delivered to site or foundation, and a final report records the move.

Why choose Global Logistic Group for project cargo in the UAE

On a project, logistics is part of the critical path. A late delivery can leave an installation crew waiting, while an early one may have nowhere to be stored. We plan the shipment backwards from the date your site needs the equipment and build in contingency for weather, port congestion and permit timelines.

  • Detailed planning that identifies risks before cargo is moved.
  • A single coordinator who manages every supplier, from the shipping line to the crane company.
  • Safety focus, with method statements and risk assessments for each critical lift. [PLACEHOLDER: HSE certifications, if any]
  • Global partner network for project cargo at origin and transit points. [PLACEHOLDER: project cargo network memberships]
  • Track record. [PLACEHOLDER: examples of past projects you can share]

Industries and cargo we handle

Energy and utilities

Transformers, generators, turbines, solar equipment and substation components for power and renewable energy projects.

Oil, gas and petrochemicals

Pressure vessels, columns, pipe spools, modules and drilling equipment for upstream and downstream facilities.

Construction and infrastructure

Tunnel boring machine parts, steel structures, bridge sections, cranes and heavy plant.

Manufacturing and mining

Production lines, presses, crushers and other industrial machinery, often relocated from one plant to another.

Managing risk on heavy lift moves

Every project shipment carries risks: weather windows at sea, high winds during crane lifts, road closures, or a vessel arriving late at the discharge port. Good planning does not remove these risks, but it controls them. For each critical stage we agree a plan B, such as an alternative vessel, a backup crane or a laydown area near the site, and we share a clear schedule so your project team can see how logistics fits into installation. Insurance is reviewed early too, because standard cargo cover may not fully protect high-value, one-off equipment.

Planning ahead

For the best results, involve us early, ideally while the equipment is still being manufactured. Early input on packing, lifting points and dimensions can save significant cost, and leaves enough time for permits, vessel space and site preparation.

Project Cargo Handling: frequently asked questions

What counts as project cargo?

Project cargo is any shipment that needs special planning because of its size, weight, value or complexity: heavy lift pieces, out-of-gauge items that do not fit standard containers, or many components that must arrive together for a project.

Do you carry out route surveys in the UAE?

Yes. Before moving oversized cargo by road, we survey the route to check clearances, bridges, road conditions and turning points, and plan any temporary works or escorts that are needed.

Which vessels are used for heavy and oversized cargo?

Depending on the cargo, we use breakbulk and heavy-lift vessels with their own cranes, ro-ro vessels for wheeled or tracked equipment, or flat rack and open top containers for smaller out-of-gauge items.

Can you handle temporary import of project equipment?

Yes. Equipment that will leave the UAE after the project can often be imported temporarily against a guarantee instead of paying full duty. We prepare the paperwork and manage the re-export.

How early should we involve you in a project?

As early as possible, ideally during procurement or manufacturing. This gives time to influence packing and dimensions, secure vessel space and obtain road permits without risking the project schedule.
